No Fuzz - Whatever

Morris – Congelado EP

Morris - Congelado EP

Congelado, meaning Frozen, is actually a rather warm EP, firmly in the minimal techno genre, but with a latin swing to the beats, perhaps unsurprising on a Monofónicos, a rather excellent Colombian netlabel. Soothing pads, funky basses and relentless kick drums are all present and correct. It only features two tracks and four remixes, but is utterly entrancing.

No Fuzz – Whatever

In total contrast, this album is a 7 track EP of (contrary to the title) fuzz-drenched rock ‘n’ roll, Russian style, with sultry female vocals, it reminds me of a dirtier Detroit Cobras. It doesn’t do anything new or original, but it has a youthful charm and energy that most other rock and roll releases fail to touch. When I originally downloaded this EP it was free on Bandcamp, but there now seems to be a $5 fee, though there is a free companion EP.

Pigeons & The Insane Porridgemakers – Le Voyage

From the long established, highly prolific and exceedingly good Clinical Archives netlabel, comes this little gem. Russian, and proud, this band love the weird. Imagine a Russian Folk Music band downing a cocktail of Frank Zappa, acid rock, John Zorn and blending it with their own musical traditions, and you have this: trumpet sections, choral work, folk tunes, space rock, musique concrete and more swirl around in some cosmic melting pot. Outstanding.
